SENIOR PLANNER, Town of Leesburg, VA 

Salary range: $47,549 - 76,078

Primary responsibilities include serving as project manager for processing various types of land use applications and preparing and presenting staff reports to the Planning Commission and Town Council of a rapidly growing town located in Loudoun County, in northern Virginia. Duties include: reviewing rezoning, special exception and Town Plan amendments applications, coordinating and integrating Town response to, and negotiating proffers with, applicants. Description: Identifies and evaluates historic resources throughout the County. Develops and implements programs to protect, preserve and interpret these resources. The Town of Leesburg is seeking a strong and innovative director to manage the Department of Planning, Zoning and Development (16-member staff).  Reporting directly to the Town Manager, the Director will oversee the towns planning, zoning, permitting, code enforcement, environmental and land development functions while collaborating on a town-wide pursuit of higher performance.

Seeking a highly qualified and motivated individual to become a member of a progressive professional staff within the Planning Division. Position available in the Department of Community Development

COMMUNITY INSPECTOR, Town of Herndon, VA  

Position available July 1, 2002 in the Department of Community Development.

DUTIES:                       Enforce zoning and property maintenance regulations and issue zoning inspection permits. Perform field inspections to determine compliance with the Towns zoning regulations and property maintenance code in response to complaints and as part of routine monitoring of the Town.  Achieve compliance with zoning regulations and property maintenance code through written and verbal communication with property owners, tenants, managers and business owners.  Maintain enforcement database.  Prepare and submit activity reports.

REQUIREMENTS:         Knowledge of enforcement of zoning and/or property maintenance regulations or enforcement of other similar regulations such as health and safety codes; ability to read, understand and interpret state and local ordinances/codes; ability to follow establised policies and procedures and make independent judgements; ability to work well with the public; ability to communicate back to supervisors and follow directives; ability to write reports and letters; ability to handle multiple tasks; and demonstrated experience in problem solving.  Must be able to communicate well and be able to fairly, impartially and effectively achieve compliance with the zoning and property maintenance regulations.  Must have knowledge of general desktop computer skills including word processing and data entry.  Must be punctual, organized, responsible and able to work some evenings and weekends.  Must possess valid drivers license with an acceptable driving record.  High school diploma, GED or equivalent, plus one year of experience in code enforcement required.  Additional education or applicable experience desirable.  Knowledge of Spanish desirable.  Will be required to obtain certification as Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector by State of Virginia within one year of being hired.

The County of Rockingham is accepting applications for the full-time position of Planner with the Community Development Department.  The positions primary responsibilities will focus on plan development review of site plans, subdivision plats, and final plans for new developments.  The Planner will research complex land use-related issues, assist with policy development, analyze statistical data, prepare reports and plans, manage databases, work with maps, and respond to public inquiries.

INTERNSHIP, Chesterfield County, VA 

The Chesterfield County Planning Department has an immediate opening for a student intern. This intern will gain valuable experience working on planning projects in a rapidly developing suburban environment. While duties will vary, the principal project the intern will work on involves working with the Department's Geographic Information System (ArcView GIS) to research zoning cases. Knowledge of ArcView a plus.

Graduate and undergraduate students studying planning, urban affairs or public administration are encouraged to apply. Many of our recent interns have used these internships to gain credit hours and meet school-related intern requirements.
